Title of course: National Certificate in Electrical Installation Systems and Maintenance (NCES)
1. Introduction
This course produces Electricians who are relevant to the Engineering Industry and the world of work. The delivery is competence-based and emphasizes acquisition of skills through practical teaching, assessment, execution of real life projects and industrial training.
2. Learning outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, the trainee will be able to:
- Install, Maintain and Repair Domestic Electrical Installations
- Install, Maintain and Repair Solar PV Systems
- Install, Maintain and Repair Generators
- Install, Maintain and Repair Electrical Motors
3. Duration of the course
NCES is a full-time course taught in two academic years. Each academic year consists of three terms of teaching, continuous assessment, practical and written examinations. At the end of each semester, trainees carry out industrial training which is a core module and lasts for at least six weeks.
4. Entry requirements:
- The minimum qualifications for NCES are as follows;
- A Uganda Certificate of Education(UCE) or its equivalent.
- Uganda Junior Technical Certificate(UJTC) or Community Polytechnic Certificate or its equivalent.
5. Prospects for National Certificate in Electrical Installation Systems and Maintenance
NCES graduates may opt to further their skills and education by offering a diploma and eventually a degree in Electrical Engineering

A certificate of competence will be awarded to the trainee upon successful completion of a particular module
It is upon the trainee to continue pursuing training for other packages or to join the world of work for any gainful employment. This will help the trainees to compile their learning achievements and those that may not be able to undertake the entire training can join the world of work and come back later when they need more sets of skills.
A trainee who completes the course with at least 2.0 cumulative grade points Average (CGPA) in all modules shall be awarded a classified ‘National Certificate in Electrical Installation Systems and Maintenance’ by the Uganda Business and Technical Examination Board (UBTEB)
