Position:        Farm Manager

Reports to:    Principal.

Location:       Iganga, Uganda

Introduction: 

Prime Vocational Institute (PVI) is a Private Training Institution registered by Ministry of Education & Sports. PVI was established in 2012 to promote access to quality market-oriented skills and gainful employment for the unemployed youth and working adults in Uganda. The Institute offers National Certificates under UBTEB and Skill based Courses under DIT in Agriculture, Automotive Mechanics, Electrical, plumbing, Hotel and Catering, Fashion and Design, The Institute pays attention to holistic empowerment of the trainees through entrepreneurship skills, computer competences, life skills development and nurturing of talents through co-curricular activities.

The Institute is presently operating at her own campus at Bugabwe, Iganga district. We have 24 well qualified and experienced staff, with equipped workshops and current enrolment of 276 students. Since its inception, the Institute has trained over 1000 trainees (over 25% female) in various technical, vocational and business courses.PVI has developed innovative training programmes including establishment of production and service units both at the Institute and within communities.  These units provide an opportunity for hands on training in real work life situations for students.

Our vision is to produce market-oriented skilled professionals in technical, vocational and business education for gainful employment and sustainable development.

This position of Farm Manager is to take lead in the management and promotion of improved farm activities at the Institute. The Farm Manager will report directly to the Principal for the day to day operational activities and to the Director for business development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop work plans and business plans for improving both animal and crop production at the Institute Farm.
  • Re-assess and improve management and profitability of the existing agribusiness enterprises.
  • Initiate, manage and scale up profitable agribusiness enterprises at the Farm.
  • Responsible for fundraising through proposal development, salable training services and products to the public and other Institutions/Schools.
  • Supervise and direct workers attached to the Farm.
  • Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Farm through cost minimization and revenue maximization efforts and strategies.
  • Ensure that all enterprises undertaken are well managed in a responsible and professional manner.
  • Develop operational budgets and ensures proper utilization of funds allocated to the Farm.
  • Conduct up to at least six hours of practical sessions for all PVI students per week in collaboration with the Head of PVI Agriculture Department.
  • Liaise with relevant resource persons, Institutions and government for improved agriculture related service delivery through the Institute.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of agri-related tailor-made courses for the target groups.
  • Develop monthly and termly reports for integration into the PVI overall report.
  • Answerable to PVI Principaland/or Director
  • Perform any other duties and responsibilities as shall be assigned by the Director and/or the Principal.
  • Abide by the policies/requirements of the Institute and Ministry of Education & Sports including the administrative manuals and instructions issued from time to time by the higher authority.

 

Required Education and Experience:

  • A Diploma in Agriculture preferable specialized in Animal Production from a recognized Institution.
  • Additional qualification in agribusiness or entrepreneurship will be an added advantage.
  • At least 2 yearswork experience in crop and animal production.
  • Experience working with the private sector and civil society organizations is preferred.
  • Experience with training farmers through demonstration and extension services.
  • Excellent communication and team building skills.
  • Ability to work with less supervision but with a sense of urgency and self – initiative.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote areas.

Position:         Programme Manager: – Prime Skills

Reports to:     Executive Director: Prime Skills Foundation.

Location:        Prime Skills Foundation HQ Offices at Iganga, Uganda

Introduction:

Prime Skills Foundation d.b.a Prime Skills is registered in Uganda as a not-for-profit making organization that supports young people to join the world of work, startup own businesses through enterprise development and access to start up financing. Prime Skills is affiliated to Prime Vocational Institute head quartered in Iganga with a focus on producing market-oriented professionals in technical, vocational and business education for gainful employment and sustainable development.

One of the objectives of Prime Skills is to support and promote apprenticeship, internships, entrepreneurship and industrial based training programs through fostering partnerships with and among relevant production firms, training centre’s and government agencies. Prime Skills has established production and training workshops and planning to enhance enterprise development programmes in the districts of Yumbe and Iganga.

This position of Program Manager is to take lead in the management and fulfillment of the mandate related to Prime Skills mission, vision and objectives especially in two districts of operation.This position will be full time with flexible and negotiable terms in the first year.

Job Summary:The Programme Manager (PM) will provide results – based leadership, coordination and management of development and business initiatives as outlined in the Prime Skills Foundationstrategy.  Under the guidance and direction of the Executive Director, the PM will be responsible for identifying business opportunities, resources, developing fundable business proposals and ensuring that development and business plans are implemented. The PM will play a lead role in resource mobilization and coordination of various development and business initiatives and establish/scale up partnerships with other development agencies, business firms, companies, government and key stakeholders in order to facilitate young people access decent gainful employment (self-employment) in the two regions of focus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and coordinate efforts to mobilize resources for the business and development initiatives of Prime Skills through developing proposals for multiple business partners and through organizing special fundraising activities.
  • Build the profile of Prime Skills in the development and business platforms especially in the field of BTVET and youth employment, improved agriculture, value chain and income improvement.
  • Ensure quality and efficient delivery of skills and enterprise development services to the youth especially those undertaking BTVET courses in selected focus districts.
  • Ensure up to date and quality documentation of development efforts undertaken by Prime Skills.
  • Ensure that all on-job training and internship programmes are well coordinated and a systematic follow up of students including tracer studies are undertaken.
  • Assist the Executive Director in the monitoring and evaluation of the Prime Skills Strategy
  • Accountable for compliance with development partners including timely submission of high-quality reporting as required.

Requirements:

  • University degree, preferably in Business Administration, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Adult and Community Education, Development Studies, Micro Finance or any other relevant field.
  • At least 2 years of business or project management level experience.
  • Experience working with youth both rural and urban, private sector, civil society organizations is preferred.
  • Experience with resource mobilization and establishing multiple partnerships.
  • Evidence of working with small development groups such as farmers, VSLAs and SACCOs
  • Evidence of leadership and organizational competences
  • Excellent communication, team building and leadership skills.
  • Proficiency in use of Microsoft office packages.
  • Ability to work with less supervision but with a sense of urgency and self – initiative.
  • Willingness to travel and work in remote areas including in refugees’ settlements.

Position:        Senior Instructor Agriculture

The position of Senior Instructor, Agriculture will lead the coordination of training in Agriculture and establish partnerships with other relevant production farms and training Institutions. The Senior Instructor will work under the direction and guidance of the Principal.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepares lectures/ lesson plans on termly and weekly basis.
  • Conducts lessons and training sessions according to the set timetable.
  • Participates in setting and marking internal and external examinations.
  • Carries out continuous assessment and evaluation during the training and field work.
  • Plans and Coordinates departmental academic programmes/work plans. 28
  • Plans and prepares training programmes/work plans and budgets
  • Organizes and participates in general staff meetings, departmental and committee meetings.
  • Support the coordination of external farmers’ trainings Participates in the relevant sector reforms.
  • Acts as a mentor to other Instructors in the department.
  • Provides guidance and counselling of students.
  • Participates in the self-assessment and the appraisal of the Instructors and farm workers.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • An Honours Bachelor’s Degree in the relevant Agriculture field from a recognized University / Institution.
  • A Certificate or Diploma in Education or experience in training is an added advantage.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the relevant agriculture field.
